Structural Repairs - Above and Beyond
Repairing Structural Cracks
Any cracks forming as a result of structural deficiencies can pose a serious
threat to the pool’s foundation. Cracks, or cracks 1/8” or more in the
interior surface are generally signs of a structural crack. These cracks are
usually vertical in nature on the walls and across the width (shorter
dimension) on the floors. Horizontal cracks along the tile line or following
the tile grout lines on matt tile indicate a beam separation. Basically the
pool shell is moving away from the deck as the shell of a pool is shot
(unusually in Gunite or shot-crete) first then the decking is done later;
either poured on top (Concrete deck) or Coping is mortared down
(Pavers and Travertine) with both options leaving a cold joint leaving a
cold joint.

Structural cracks typically form as a result of wall
movement from thermal changes, tree roots seeking water or just expanding,
uneven loading, settling of the pool shell, sink hole, soil to thin, Gunite
not applied to proper thickness, improper PSI of Gunite(“watered down”) (
more aggregate, less concrete) and/or soil shrinkage.
For the repair of structural foundation cracks, the
injection material best suited is epoxy. Because the crack was initially
caused by stress resulting from movement of the foundation, epoxy works to
seal the crack, but epoxy by itself, will not prevent further foundation
cracking. Further reinforcement most likely will be necessary, using carbon
fiber countersunk staples, pins or straps.
Carbon
Fiber/Kevlar reinforcement
Bowed walls occur as a result of soil loads pushing
against the wall. Compounded with depth and other factors and the lateral
forces surpass the foundation's original resistance to these loads. Over
time, these factors can produce lateral bending and the foundation or pool
wall becomes bowed. This condition also produces significant cracking. If
left unattended this condition will worsen with time jeopardizing both the
structural integrity and resale value of the property.
walls can be resolved using the latest carbon-fiber technology systems.
Using carbon-fiber kevlar sheet straps in combination with specifically
designed epoxies, bowed basement walls can now be repaired and arrested with
little to no obtrusiveness. The repaired bowed basement wall can then be
painted thereby creating an almost invisible repair, thereby increasing the
resale value of your home.
There are 6 ways in which a cement fracture in a below-grade poured wall
generally moves:
•Tensile/inward: due to lateral loading
•Outward: due to shrinkage of soils
•Opening: due to thermal changes
•Closing: due to thermal changes, i.e. cold, wet, dry, etc.
•Shear: due to differential loading
•Combination: all of the above conditions, plus the added load of the
structure

The best results for structural cracks in foundations is using a combination
of epoxy crack injection and carbon-fiber kevlar reinforcement.
Concrete crack repair using Fortress Stabilization
Systems' materials and techniques address all 6 of these movements.
Concrete crack repair using the Fortress
Stabilization System involves, after surface preparation, a standard
injection technique to fill all voids with a specially formulated epoxy
mixture. After the voids are filled, staples are installed across the
fracture in a fashion that relieves and dissipates both lateral and vertical
movement. Staple placement is critical for proper fix and is usually
engineered into the project plan. Staples are usually placed no more than 24
inches apart for effective reinforcement.
When a fracture is caused by differential loading (shear), the fix is
considered structural. The staples in this case are crisscrossed at a 30
degree angles that will load the carbon in tension, allowing function in
shear. The result is not only a fracture fix, but restoration of the
structural integrity of the wall.
When carbon-fiber sheet staples are anchored into the cement, fewer loads
are exerted on the weak surface substrate and transferred into actual
cement. This improves its entire inter-workings with the material of choice.
Concrete crack repair and stopping shifting walls with Carbon-fiber is a
proven application and technology that works as well in your home as in
commercial buildings, bridges, mines, road surfaces, and in any other
applications where reinforcement and reparation are need.
